WEEK 4 POST 3

After reading the Chapter as a whole, the topic that I wanted to further discuss was that of common ground and finding the median between different aspects of my life. Being a collegiate athlete entails a lot of devotion to your sport and it becomes almost a job. We spend hours on hours each week perfecting our craft at practices, workouts, meetings, and other team events. If I am not able to find common ground between my friends, family, sports, and school work then I will make people unhappy. My family understands that I am not going to be able to come home very often and see them, which is a sacrifice, but makes the time that I am with them that much better. My friends are always going to be around and I’m lucky enough to have good relationships with my teammates that I can be with my best friends doing something we all enjoy every day at practice. Common ground is important for me because I cant afford to spend too much time on any one thing, and making sacrifices and finding time to do everything is an every day thing for me.

  1. Hi D.Slaton20,

I loved your post, and I'm glad you decided to pull common ground out of the text to apply to your own life! You're so right when you talked about how if we don't find common ground, we are going to have unhappy relationships. I think it's great that you're mindful of that, and I think that we are learning throughout this class that this is necessary to do in order to resolve conflicts. We need to find what brought us together in the first place, instead of possibly always focusing on the friction. You relating it to being an athlete was helpful for us to understand how this affects your day-to-day. Thanks for your post and perspective!

  2. Hello,

I want to start off by saying I thought this was a very good blog. I can relate everything you said to my life. It is very difficult to find a median in balancing everything in my life: school, baseball, family, friends, etc. I think it is very important to find a healthy balance between all of these responsibilities. For me, at first it was difficult to balance everything out and finding time for things besides school and baseball. Being that I am a senior now I understand how to balance everything out and make everyone around me happy. I think it is crucial to make some sacrifices in order to do everything that needs to be done. Overall, this was a good post and I enjoyed reading it.

  3. Hey D,

I can imagine being an athlete at a college must be stressful and fulfilling. I realize you guys are under constraints to both perform well in your sport and academically, so I tip my hat to your devotion.

Finding a common ground to balance out your hectic life with your friends and family, to find a time to for everyone, must be a challenge. Yet, finding a common ground on anything isn’t always easy. As humans living in a world where we must continually communicate with one another, common ground is almost a necessity if we are all going to get along. Things like proper etiquette, behavior and respect tie into this. Most people know that inappropriate behavior is not something to be tolerated in society. For example, we would usually not intentionally hurt a stranger we see on a street, or push over an old lady with a walker. It’s a common ground that everyone in society is normally in on. Though there are a few bad eggs.

    Good job on your post!

  4. Hello!

I loved your post. I think that it is very true and something that people have trouble finding a lot. It takes a lot of dedication to stay committed to something you are passionate about when there are other things going on in your life. Being able to find the common ground between all parties helps out personally in your life and everyone's around you. Very good!
