WEEK 9 POST 3

The topic that I would like to further discuss this week is related to my first post of this week. It was definitely one of my favorite posts thus far this semester because it was the most relatable to me. Being a college athlete has many perks and things that I am very grateful for, but at the same time comes with many sacrifices and commitments that others may not see. For example, I hardly see any of my friends that do not play baseball anymore. I spend some much time with my teammates on and off the field that there is hardly any time for the people that I used to hangout with that no longer play baseball with me. Creating a distinction between hanging out with my friends and working out and practicing with my team is really tough sometimes. At this point in my life baseball is my job and I have to realize that in order to perform the best I can I have to make sacrifices when it comes to spending time with friends. Integrating the two is what makes things easier on me; having my teammates as friends and getting to work with them everyday is something I definitely have come to appreciate.

  1. It must be difficult being a college athlete and devoting so much time to your team, while at the same time rewarding. Your idea of integration is a great idea to deal with the time constraints of being on the team. It must be hard not being able to make time for your other friends but I am sure they understand. I guess inviting them to your games may be a way to make up for it, though you may not get to hang out with them much during it.

I see this happening sometimes at my own job, In-N-Out Burger. People who work there full time tend to become really close with each other, and I often see them only spending time with other In-N-Out people, managers especially. It’s like their whole group of friends revolve around other people who work at In-N-Out. I am happy to say that I have a vast number of friends in different groups, but it is hard to hang out with all of them all the time. I guess it’s a good thing we have text messaging and Facebook to help us. Imagine living in the time before computers and cellphones, how much harder it would to keep in touch with friends you don’t see or live near?

Good post, it made me think a lot.
